Citizen Financing for Sustainable Mobility: Local Communities Leading the Transition

Citizen-led investment is proving to be a powerful mechanism for driving local sustainable mobility. Through community financing models, engaged citizens can directly fund and deploy carpooling hubs and shared vehicle fleets tailored to their territorial needs.

A concrete benchmark is the French pioneer Citiz (originally founded in Strasbourg as Auto’trement by twenty citizens with just 3 shared cars, now expanded to over 400 vehicles across 40+ cities), highlighting how grassroots participation can successfully scale low-carbon transport solutions.

This initiative aligns with efforts backed by the European Union’s LIFE Programme to foster active citizen engagement in the green transition.
